Crowning of Mary and May devotions…

crowning1One of the Catholic practices is the dedication of May as the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary. May crownings and other special events in May in honor of Mary, such as public recitation of the rosary and singing of the Loreto Litany are communal events. We can take the month of May as an opportunity to renew our own devotion to the Mother of God by dusting off our rosaries and adding a few more Marian prayers to our daily routine. Parents, in particular, should encourage Marian devotion in their children, since the non-Catholic Christians they encounter today often downplay (if not denigrate) the role that the Blessed Virgin played in our salvation through her fiat–her joyous "Yes" to the will of God.
In our parish, on this 1st day of this beautiful month of Mary, we began our month-long devotions in Honor of the Blessed Mother. On Sunday, May 5th, we had the ceremony of the crowning of the statue of the Blessed Mother by the BVM Sodality from St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy.

The girls, led by two altar servers, processed around the church to the statue standing on the altar.  Each girl placed a carnation in the vase standing before the statue with the last girl crowning the statue.  During the ceremony our children’s choir sang beautifully songs dedicated to the Blessed Mother including Immaculate Mary and Gentle Woman.  The ceremony was a very special way through which everyone at the Mass could begin honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus. We will continue our devotion to Mary each Monday at 6:30pm before the Mass and Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in English language and after the 7 PM mass Tuesday through Friday in Polish language.
