Thirty-five seventh-grade candidates for Confirmation and their sponsors gathered in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Brooklyn, for liturgy at 9:00 A.M. on Sunday, March 6, 2011. At this special Mass, the sponsors acknowledged that the students were “worthy to be admitted to the sacrament of Confirmation” on Sunday, March 27, 2011. They also confirmed that the youngsters are serious about “trying to live by the Gospel.”
In his homily, Rev. Joseph Szpilski, who celebrated the Mass, encouraged the candidates to truly understand that Confirmation is not the end of their spiritual, religious formation, but that it is a major step towards their accepting and living out Christ’s mandate to practice their faith by adherence to the Ten Commandments in their daily life. The Holy Spirit will be there to inspire and assist them on this their journey of Christian maturity.
Fr. Joe also stressed the important role that Confirmation sponsors play in the religious upbringing of the child. The sponsors must set the example of Christian living, especially in faithfulness to the Mass and the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
After blessing the medals bearing the cross and a red dove, symbolic of the Holy Spirit, the candidates approached the altar to receive their individual necklaces, while the sponsors received a firm handshake from Fr. Szpilski.
May the Holy Spirit, the Giver of Life, fill the hearts and minds of the Confirmation candidates and their sponsors with the Gifts of the Spirit. Sr. Dorothea
