On February 18, 2012, Archbishop Timothy Dolan was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. He has received a gold ring and red silk biretta from the pontiff inside St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The 62-year-old leader of New York’s 2.6 million Catholics became the city’s eighth cardinal during the two-hour service at Vatican. He was one of 22 bishops elevated into the exclusive College of Cardinals group, which gives him the power to appoint the next pope, among other responsibilities. The cardinals are considered the pontiff’s closest advisors. Cardinal Dolan said he was honored to receive the title and a new biretta.
May God bless you, protect you and lead you, Cardinal Dolan, in your Apostolate to the Church of New York and all of us!
