We are infinitely thankful to God for having given us such a wonderful, wise and benevolent pope in Benedict XVI. We hope that the Church will be granted a worthy successor: a rock of faith, a leader open to the Holy Spirit, a pope prayerful and holy. For this reason we should offer our prayers that the Holy Spirit may guide, protect and enlighten our Cardinals when they determine the next successor of St. Peter. You now have the opportunity to actively be part of this providential endeavor by having a Cardinal assigned to you, who you will support through your prayer and intercession during the coming weeks before and during the conclave and for three days following the election.

On February 18, 2012, Archbishop Timothy Dolan was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. He has received a gold ring and red silk biretta from the pontiff inside St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The 62-year-old leader of New York’s 2.6 million Catholics became the city’s eighth cardinal during the two-hour service at Vatican. He was one of 22 bishops elevated into the exclusive College of Cardinals group, which gives him the power to appoint the next pope, among other responsibilities. The cardinals are considered the pontiff’s closest advisors. Cardinal Dolan said he was honored to receive the title and a new biretta.
May God bless you, protect you and lead you, Cardinal Dolan, in your Apostolate to the Church of New York and all of us!
